Finance and banking

General information

As in other European Union countries, the currency in Catalonia is the euro.

The banking system meets all international standards and has a network of ATMs available 24 hours a day. In addition, most bank branches are open from Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The usual method of payment in shops and restaurants is by credit or debit card or in cash.

If you are staying for a longer period, it is recommended that you open a bank account in Catalonia, as this will allow you to securely manage your expenses and income (renting accommodation, receiving money from your home country, making payments, etc.) and withdraw cash from ATMs.

You can open an account at a bank depending on whether you are a resident or non-resident, and the required procedures will vary accordingly. Bank branches will inform you about the necessary steps and the type of account that best suits your needs.

Bank branches are also the main place to exchange currency, although this can also be done at exchange offices and in most hotels. It is advisable to avoid exchanging money in unofficial or non-regulated places.

Additional information

  • In Catalonia, cheques are not commonly used for recurring payments.
  • In some establishments, payments with €500 banknotes are not accepted.
  • We recommend that, before leaving your country, you check with your bank the fees for using your card abroad, as well as the conditions for making money transfers.
  • You should also keep the telephone number to call in case your bank card is lost or stolen readily available.
