What procedures do you need to complete?

  • If you are a student from an EU Member State, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Norway or Switzerland, you have the right to free movement and residence in Spain.
  • If your stay is longer than three months, you must apply for registration in the Register of EU Citizens, where you will receive a certificate with your identification details and your Foreigner Identification Number (NIE).

How do you register in the Register of EU Citizens?

You can only complete the procedure in person at the Foreigners’ Office (Oficina d’Estrangeria) in the province where you reside, or at the corresponding police station.

To book an appointment, you must access the Government’s electronic headquarters or contact the relevant police offices.

What documents do you need to register in the Register?

  • Appointment confirmation. 
  • Completed and signed application form.
  • Proof of payment of the relevant administrative fee.
  • Valid and current passport.
  • Proof of registration in the municipal register (padrón) of the city where you reside. 
  • Proof that you have sufficient financial resources for your stay. 
  • Health insurance contracted in Spain or in another country providing full health coverage. 
  • Proof of enrolment at the university where you are studying.
